GOLDEN VALLEY, N.D. (AP) — A 20-year-old man accused of breaking into a North Dakota home and exchanging gunfire with one of the residents was charged Tuesday with attempted murder.

Brett Knudson, who lives in rental property in Golden Valley, is being held on $500,000 cash bond, The Bismarck Tribune reported (http://bit.ly/1hg7l3k ).

Mercer County State's Attorney Jessica Binder told the newspaper that Knudson has requested a court appointed attorney. She said a preliminary hearing has not yet been scheduled.

Authorities say Knudson broke into the rural Golden Valley home of Jeff and Connie Gegelman Sunday afternoon. Jeff Gegelman, 60, was shot in the chest and twice in the arm Sunday afternoon. He was treated at a Bismarck hospital and released, a bullet still lodged in fatty tissue in his chest after ricocheting off one of his ribs.

Gegelman said he was home alone when he saw three men drive into his driveway. He became suspicious and armed himself with a .22-caliber handgun, which he said he was holding when Knudson open his door.

"He walks in, yells 'Anyone home? Anyone home?' And when he came in, I was waiting for him by the bathroom," Gegelman told KXMB-TV. "And I just said, 'You picked the wrong house to rob today,' and he started shooting."

Gegelman returned fire, wounding the shooter in the back as he fled.

Knudson was treated at a hospital before he was taken to jail.

Connie Gegelman told the Tribune that she can't believe her husband is still with her.

"It's a miracle — an honest-to-God miracle," she said.

Mercer County Sheriff Dean Danzeisen told the newspaper his department is continuing its investigation and believes another man was involved. He said the whereabouts of the other man are known and he believes that no one involved remains at large.

Knudson was also charged with criminal trespass, driving under suspension and possession of drug paraphernalia.
