Thane sitting this session out

For the first time in 36 years, Russ Thane stayed home instead of gathering together with other elected lawmakers to reorganize the N.D. House and Senate prior to a new session. He went about his regular business this week as the man voted in November to replace him, Sen. Arden Anderson, D-Wahpeton, learned about the state's computer system and where he was expected to park outside the capitol.

Thane served District 25 in the N.D. Senate for 36 years, spent nearly three decades on the appropriations committee but felt it was time to quit. He did not seek re-election in the November general election, the first time in more than 30 years his name was not on the local ballot. "To be honest, I miss it," Thane said. "You have the sense of maybe you should be there but you can't."

The District 25 Republican party will host a recognition night for Thane Saturday at the Wahpeton Eagles Club. The event begins with a 5 p.m. social.

With his extensive career in the Senate, Thane will be greatly missed by fellow legislators, the people of District 25 and others. "It's not just a loss for the party, but to the state because of his institutional knowledge," Rep. John Wall, D-Wahpeton, said. "He remembered everything." Wall said Thane remembered when bills were introduced, why they were introduced and the ramifications of legislation.

Thane was a leader in the Senate and a mentor to many, including Wall. Thane was especially concerned for the most vulnerable people in society, especially the mentally disabled. Appropriate human service funding was Thane's No. 1 priority, Wall said. "He was a real forefront on forcing bills and legislation," Wall said.

Thane also worked hard for education, especially for North Dakota State College of Science. He helped in new construction and improvements to infrastructure.

Thane plans to stay semi-active by keeping current on what's going on in the Legislature and expressing opinions to friends and local legislators. "Oh yes, I'll watch with interest. I'm hoping I can get a couple friends in the Legislature to keep me posted about some key issues," Thane said.

Anderson will officially begin his legislative career in January 2007, taking Thane's place in the Senate. "I really appreciate all the good works Russell Thane did for our district and the state of North Dakota. I know it's big shoes to fill. By observing them over the years, I'll try to carry on the excellent tradition for us," Anderson said.

Anderson feels his experience as Wahpeton City Auditor for more than 30 years will prepare him for the Senate. He did quite a bit of testifying in front of committees as the auditor and knows a few of the legislators already. Anderson will serve on the political subdivisions committee. He hopes to build long and lasting relationships with those in the Legislature.

" Its now March 2009 and I still get calls from that number (905-323-3900). I get a call from them nearly every week. I have call display and recognize the number now and don't answer it. But what I'm wondering is why they've been allowed to go on this long? They must still be making a substantial profit on the backs of un-suspecting citizens to continue with this scam!! I think Telus is and has been aware of this problem but can't be bothered to just simply "disconnect" this number! Either that or they too are profitting! That would'nt surprise me "
