Rotary names eight outlying March students of month

Seventeen area high school students were named Students of the Month for February. They are Samantha Schmit of Fairmount; Nathan Gurule and Jamie Mauch of Hankinson; Amber Mattson of Lidgerwood; BJ Selstedt and Jacob D. Thompson of Richland 44; Neil Dotzenrod and Tracy Mauch of Wyndmere; and Keenan Cooper, Jordan Fleck, Lauren Hendrickson, Brittney Long, Julie Medenwald, Tony Mitterling, Cody Nuenthel, Tony Pope and Jordan Spiekermeier of Wahpeton.

Schmit, the daughter of Dan and Jan Schmit of rural Fairmount, is a junior at Fairmount High School. She participates in basketball, volleyball, golf, summer recreation softball and Catholic Youth Organization. Special accomplishments include being on the A and B honor roll, being named to the North Dakota State University Honor Choir and making her 1,000th career basketball point, 1,000th career rebound. She has also received many basketball and volleyball awards. Her future plans are yet to be determined.

Gurule, the son of Steve and Carol Gurule of Hankinson, is a senior at Hankinson High School. He has been named to the honor roll, Region 1 honorable mention in football and state music. He received the Pirate award in football, baseball and track, as well as other multiple awards in track. He participates in basketball, football, track, drama, yearbook, basketball stats. Special achievements include the Legion Citizenship Award and top sprinter award in eighth-grade track. He is involved in CYO and Teens for Life. He plans to attend Mayville State University to study pre-med.

Mauch, the son of Bill and Sandy Mauch of rural Mooreton, is a junior at Hankinson High School.

He is on the honor roll, was named to Who's Who Among American High School Students and participated in Math Counts. Special awards include being named to the All Region 1 football team first team, all state football team, and all district and all conference for basketball. He participates in basketball, football, track and baseball. He participates in CYO and ECI basketball. He plans to attend NDSU to study software engineering and play football or basketball.

Mattson, the daughter of Bill and Yvonne Mattson of Lidgerwood, is a junior at Lidgerwood Public School. She is an A honor roll student, received scholastic honor awards for three years, and participates in volleyball and cheerleading. She participates in student council, was the class secretary/treasurer for five years, Farmers Union Oil Co. and CYO. Special achievements include being named to the National Society of High School Scholars and attended the N.D. Leadership Seminar at the University of Mary, Bismarck. She plans to attend North Dakota State College of Science to become a pediatric nurse.

Selstedt, the son of Randy and Cindy Selstedt of rural Walcott, is a senior at Richland 44 High School. He was named to the National Honor Society. He was named to the all tournament team in baseball at Madison, S.D. He participates in basketball, baseball, FFA and Close Up. Special achievements include participating in the state basketball tournament and finishing third in state for American Legion baseball. He plans to attend NDSU to study ag engineering.

Thompson, the son of Lisa and Dan Thompson of rural Walcott, is a junior at Richland 44 High School. Special awards include being qualified for state in FFA and being named the most improved player in basketball. He participates in basketball, band, choir, FFA and Close Up. Special achievements include being named most improved player. He plans to attend Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn., to study pre-med.

Dotzenrod, the son of Bill and LuAnn Dotzenrod of rural Wyndmere, is a senior at Wyndmere High School. He is the National Honor Society secretary, was named to the National Honor Roll, is on the high school's A honor roll and was a Homecoming candidate. He was the FFA officer of the day, participates in band, jazz band, track and field. He is involved in FFA, KVLY-TV High School Challenge Team, Tri-College Mathematics Competition, and Junior Engineering Technical Society (JETS), academic olympic team and is vice president of his church's Lutheran Youth Organization, and was accepted into NDSU with distinction. His future plans include attending NDSU to study computer science.

Mauch, the daughter of Shelley and Ted Mauch of rural Wyndmere, is a junior at Wyndmere High School. She was named to the National Honor Society, participates in Tri-College Math, is on the high school's student council, Tears, Lutheran Youth Fellowship vice president, is on the A honor roll, is involved in yearbook, band, jazz band, choir, NDSU honor choir, state music, volleyball, basketball, track, state track champion and softball. She plans to attend NDSU to study interior design or architectural drafting.
