For the fourth year the Three Rivers Crisis Center and North Dakota State College of Science Campus Violence Prevention Office hosted Walk A Mile in Her Shoes on Tuesday, May 1. The event took place in the campus oval at noon where several men slipped on and taped on high heeled shoes to their feet.

The men actually run 60 yards during each heat in high heels to symbolically experience and gain a better understanding of women’s lives. Each hour in the United States 75 women are raped, 360 women are battered and four women are murdered, said NDSCS Campus Advocate for Three Rivers Crisis Center Kathy Mauch.

In Richland County during 2006, the county received 94 reports of domestic violence, 36 reports of sexual assault and 15 reports of violence against children.

From left Kyle Weinandt, Derek Myers, Archie Korpu, Robert Kramer, Tim Such and Brandon Gieser raced in the final heat Tuesday during Walk A Mile in Her Shoes. The event is held annually at the North Dakota State College of Science to raise awareness for violence against women. Weinandt won first place, Myers won second and Korpu and Such tied for third. Many men from the college and community gathered in the oval on NDSCS campus to put on high heels and run. The men ran in five heats — NDSCS faculty and staff, NDSCS football team, community members and law enforcement, Campus Activities Board/student senate, and resident assistants.

Two men tied from the CAB/student senate team, making the final heat made up of six men. Tim Such of the automotive department, Kyle Weinandt of the football team, Robert Kramer of Bremer Bank in Wahpeton, Derek Myers and Archie Korpu of the CAB/student senate, and Brandon Gieser of the resident assistants ran in the final 60 yard heat to win a few prizes and help raise awareness.

Though Such wears a dress to the even each year, he is quite serious about the event. He is there to support women and show it isn’t easy to run in high heels. This year he sported a magenta, backless dress.

" Mr Smith owes the Geffres an apology? How about the Geffres apologize to the community of Hankinson. In two short years that family has torn apart a school, a community, family and friends. They have showed no respect for Hankinson. Hankinson is not their community! It's time for the Geffres to move on. "

" I agree with the previous poster that this was not about the girls getting playing time. He should probably not be allowed to teach at any age level ever again. "

" There is more to this than just the Geffre's complaints and Jess Smith knows it, why doesn't he just come clean about everything and all complaints there has been on Gravalin in the past three years,he has been covering up and sweeping under the rug so to speak. This isn't just about parents that didn't think their girls got to play enough. Shouldn't the first duty of his position be to protect our children. "
