Youth get involved in Wilkin ATOD

The Wilkin County Alcohol Tobacco and Other Drugs Coalition Youth Board met Sunday to seek ways to hit the media's strategic targeting of youth head-on.

Brenda Woytassek, ATOD coordinator, said nearly a dozen youth from surrounding schools participated. The youth board was created to bring student-aged people into the coalition and tap into their invaluable insight about the pressures being confronted by today's youth.

"We discussed targeted ad campaigns," she said. She cited a statistic that revealed companies spend millions of dollars per minute, 365 days a year, projecting ads onto youth.

The kids are learning just how clever marketing can be, Woytassek said. "A woman from 'Grey's Anatomy' did an ad in a revealing evening gown," she said. The youth learned that sex sells and is incorporated into many places where it seems oddly misplaced. "The ad was for milk. It said, 'Great anatomy,'" Woytassek explained.

The youth viewed a video about underage drinking as well, Woytassek said.

Natalie Butenhoff, detective sergeant with the Breckenridge Police Department, was the presenter at the meeting. "I showed them various drug paraphernalia," she said. Butenhoff showed the youth confiscated one-hitters, crack pipes and containers, which addicts hide their drugs in to avoid detection.

Butenhoff said the youth were somewhat surprised at how desperate addicts become. "They were surprised at where an addict will shoot-up when they run out of places," she said.

"The kids really want to see Tim Fox's meth video," Woytassek said. "We'll probably be viewing that at the next meeting."

The next meeting will be in December.

I have adapted well to my prosthetics and there's not many things a can't tackle with some success. The support of my friends and OT have been very uplifting. Each day is a challenge and I enjoy these times. "

" Its now March 2009 and I still get calls from that number (905-323-3900). I get a call from them nearly every week. I have call display and recognize the number now and don't answer it. But what I'm wondering is why they've been allowed to go on this long? They must still be making a substantial profit on the backs of un-suspecting citizens to continue with this scam!! I think Telus is and has been aware of this problem but can't be bothered to just simply "disconnect" this number! Either that or they too are profitting! That would'nt surprise me "
