"It was his birthday, he would have been 88 on the third," said his son, Jim Oliver.
So, at Chahinkapa Zoo on Thursday ice cream will be served to the first 200 children to visit the zoo. Also in his honor, children will be admitted into the zoo for free with a paid adult from 4-7 p.m.

Oliver added his father often held days where he'd give children that came to the zoo popsicles.
"Bud's dedication was geared toward the young visitors," said Chahinkapa Zoo Director Kathy Diekman in her June 27 Daily News column.
Wahpeton Parks and Recreation Director Wayne Beyer said the emphasis of the day's activities will be put on Grandpa's Little Zoo. Staff will be available to answer questions any of the visitors have about animals or even Bud Oliver's involvement with the zoo.
Bud Oliver was known for many things when he was alive, much of which revolves around helping the city of Wahpeton grow. What Bud was known best for was his influence in starting Grandpa's Little Zoo in 1984. Bud wanted to see a petting zoo so children could have the opportunity to touch animals while learning appreciation and respect for the creatures.
"His wish was that every child who visited the zoo had a memorable experience with hands-on feeding and petting the domestic farm animals in Grandpa's Little Zoo," Diekman said. "We remember him as an outstanding zoo supporter, ambassador and friend."
