Welcome, MS Bike Ride
Wahpeton-Breckenridge will see a surge of people next weekend as the MS Bike Ride will come to town between noon and 4 p.m. Saturday, July 27 and stay over night. The ride begins in Horace and bikers may begin arriving in Wahpeton at the finish line at North Dakota State College of Science as early as 11 a.m.
We fully support this ride as it raises money for a great cause — finding a cure for multiple sclerosis. We encourage the people of Wahpeton-Breckenridge and the surrounding area to cheer on the riders at NDSCS when they arrive at the finish line. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society will be set up at the college and have information on the ride.
Not only is it great these riders are bicycling for a great cause, their trip to Wahpeton-Breckenridge will have a fairly large economic impact.
This is the first time in several years the MS Bike Ride has come to Wahpeton-Breckenridge and with 250 riders staying in hotels and visiting our attractions, the city will see a great benefit.
"Some are already talking about going to the zoo, the pool and have other plans," said Amy Hinkemeyer, development manager for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in Fargo.
Besides the 250 riders, there will be many more volunteers helping along the way at rest stops, which are set up every 10 miles with food and water, and support vehicles "that rove the route," Hinkemeyer said. These people may also spend the night in the Twin Towns.
"Some will stay in the dorms at NDSCS and others have reservations at the hotels," Hinkemeyer said.
Wherever these bicyclists stay, we encourage the Twin Towns to welcome them with open arms. They are visitors to our fine cities and are taking time out of their busy summers to ride for a good cause.
So, welcome bicyclists. We are happy to have you and hope you enjoy your stay!
