The Wahpeton Huskies volleyball team returned home Tuesday night, to face the No. 3 team in the East Region, Fargo Shanley. The Huskies played hard, but could not outlast the Deacons and lost 3-1.

Head coach Jerry Tibiatowski said, "take away that fourth game, and we played really well against a very good team."

After being tied at four, Shanley went on the attack, and scored the next seven points in the first game.

Trailing 11-4, the Huskies came back to within five points at 18-13. Katelyn Kleven and Hannah Schradick played well at the net. Shanley went on a 7-3 run at the end, however, and won the first game 25-16.

The second game started out close. Shanley got an early lead, but the Huskies took a lead at 7-6 and didn't trail the rest of the game.

Schradick and Kleven again played strong at the net, building their lead to 21-15. Shanley kept it close, but Schradick put away the winner at game point to even the match with a 25-21 win.

The third game was also very close. The teams traded the lead early and the game was tied as late as 8-8. Shanley went on a 7-1 run from that point and built a 15-9 lead.

The Huskies kept it close. With Schradick serving, Wahpeton got to within one point at 17-16. Kleven, along with Kaitlin McNary got kills during that stretch. But, the Deacons were too strong and put the game away, winning 25-19.

Needing one more win, Shanley came out in the fourth game and won easily, 25-5 and took the match.

"We had some good stuff, and we had some bad stuff," coach Tibiatowski said. "We had good hitting, some good blocking. Our blockers must have been getting tired in that fourth game. We weren't getting up on the block. And when you don't do that, Shanley was able to put the ball where ever they wanted to."

The Huskies are back at home for their next match Thursday, when they host Fargo North at 7 p.m.
