The baseball season is now officially over.
The Philadelphia Phillies beat Tampa Bay in what might have been one of the better World Series that no one saw. The early television ratings indicated that not a lot of people were tuned in.
I'm not sure why. The series featured good pitching, timely hitting and lots of drama.
It's hard to beat a baseball game played in a monsoon for drama.
And now, you can add another name of former Minnesota Twins players who have gotten rings with other teams.
David Ortiz, A.J. Pierzynski, Doug Mientkiewicz and now JC Romero. And if the Rays had won, take Romero's name off that list, but add the names of Jason Bartlett and Matt Garza, who played for the Rays in the World Series. And there are probably others that I've forgotten.
Does this mean that the Twins are making bad front office moves? Or are these players just the missing pieces that other teams needed to get over the top?
While I'm talking about players with World Series rings, how about Chris Coste?
The Moorhead, Minn. native, Concordia College graduate and one time Fargo-Moorhead Red Hawks catcher got his ring.
Coste was a long time minor leaguer who finally got a chance in the Phillies organization and got the call to join the big league club.
If you watched the Phillies clincher and celebration Wednesday night, you may have seen a glimpse of Coste jumping on the monkey pile of jubilant Phillies players near the pitchers mound. You may have also heard Philadelphia closer Brad Lidge in the post-game interview thanking the bullpen and his catchers, Coste included, for helping him be so successful this year.
Coste didn't see much action in the World Series itself. But, I'm sure next spring, when the Phillies are officially presented with their rings, Coste will be thinking about all the years and all of the long bus trips his career took before finally getting to that day.
Now, it's time to switch gears.
This weekend, if you can't find a local sporting event to attend, you're not really trying.
We have just about everything going on for the sports enthusiast.
The Twin Towns will be host to the Region 13 volleyball tournament at the Blikre Activities Center, starting Thursday.
The North Dakota State College of Science men's and women's basketball teams are in the AmericInn Classic, starting Friday and the North Dakota State University Bison club hockey team will play a game at the Stern's Ice Arena Saturday, with a portion of the gate admission going to benefit the B/W Blades hockey program.
And let’s not forget that a road trip will get you some local playoff football.
