A sure sign that colder weather is on the way, is that area schools start to focus on their winter sports.

The golf clubs, footballs and volleyballs have been put away, and are replaced with basketballs, ice skates and wrestling mats.

In the Twin Towns, athletes and coaches are gearing up for the winter seasons.

While the North Dakota State College of Science mens and womens basketball teams already have a half dozen games under their belts, the High Schools are just starting.

In Wahpeton, wrestling practice began a week ago.

Head coach Kelly McNary's team has their first match against Grand Forks Red River next Tuesday.

Both boys and girls basketball teams begin their practices on Monday.

In Breckenridge, the Cowgirls began practice Monday afternoon.

Head coach Joel Herder is expecting 41 girls to participate in the Freshmen through Senior classes.

For the Cowboys, their basketball and wrestling practices begin next Monday.

Gymnastics practice began Monday as well, while the B/W Blades boys have been practicing since Nov. 10th. The Blades travel to Beulah for their first game on Nov. 29th.

So, as the leaves change colors and are blown off the trees, it’s soon time to make sure you have the jumper cables and block heaters ready.

Maybe sneak out at half time to let your car run for a bit, and let the games begin.
