Wahpeton-Breckenridge residents will soon see a new board game popping up in local stores for the holiday season. In conjunction with First Choice Enterprises Inc., based in Platt, S.D., the Chahinkapa Zoo is selling the games as a fundraiser.

They are called Hometown USA Family Fun Board Game and they feature Wahpeton and Breckenridge businesses on the path around the board. Each space is sponsored by a local business, with some wild spaces asking players to name a police officer or if they know the mayor of Wahpeton or Breckenridge.

Jeff and Jackie Olsen of Platt came up with the idea for this game in 1990-91 to teach wholesome values and help church youth groups or other nonprofit organizations raise money. In 2001-02, their dream came to fruition. They now sell the game throughout the United States.

There are four categories of questions including patriotic trivia, health trivia, education trivia and Bible trivia. In going around the board, when players are asked trivia questions, and give the correct answer, they can fill in a red strip on the American flag template or the blue square of the flag. Whoever fills in the flag first wins the game.

Since this game is being sold as a fundraiser, $10 from each game sold goes directly to Chahinkapa Zoo. The local sponsorships on the board have made it possible for the zoo to purchase the games at wholesale cost, which is why the zoo gets the $10 from each game sold. There is a minimum of 320 games to be circulated in Wahpeton-Breckenridge.

Chahinkapa Zoo Director Kathy Diekman said she's excited about the game. "It's a great way of getting our Twin Town businesses on one board game," she said. There are 84 sponsors, which shows the great response, Diekman said. "It's a great way to incorporate Wahpeton and Breckenridge together, which I think is great," she said.

You can find your Hometown USA Wahpeton-Breckenridge board game at the following businesses: Chahinkapa Zoo, Wahpeton Breckenridge Area Chamber of Commerce, Vision Ford and Body Shop, Econofoods, Breckenridge Drug, Wahpeton Video and Deli, Jubilee Foods, Snyder Drug Store, Farmers Union Oil of the Southern Valley, Heather Ann's Floral, Mother Hubbard's Cupboard, The Frame Shop, The Gift Factory, The Lily Pad, Corner Drug, NDSCS customer service desk and Hairetage Hallmark.
