While many nonprofit organizations throughout the country face an increased struggle for finances and volunteerism, a local organization is pushing forward to do the best they can to meet their mission.

Someplace Safe of Breckenridge, an organization that offers advocacy service for domestic violence, general crime and sexual assault victims and their families, is seeing an increase in donations this holiday season.

"We've had quite a bit of new stuff this year," said Victim Advocate Lynette Meyer. "We're hearing on the news all the time that economics are bad, yet our community is still very generous to those in need."

With fifteen families in need in the area, a few new businesses took on the task of making this Christmas special.

Curves for Women, Wahpeton, sponsored a family for the first time this year. Pat Swan, manager, received a family's wish-list and started a drive to help the family.

Swan said a number of gifts have come in from several Curves members to help out a mother and her four children.

A local Girl Scout troop also brought in handmade stockings and other various gifts.

In addition, State Bank and Trust helped out by having employees and other community members decorate purchased dolls and teddy bears in a variety of outfits.

Meyer said an individual family came in and wanted to donate gifts for families in needed instead of exchanging gifts.

A separate cash donation also helped to purchase gifts on a family's wish list.

For the fifth year in a row, Foxhome Lutheran Church and Vukka Lutheran Church, also in Foxhome, adopted Someplace Safe this holiday by bringing in gift cards and miscellaneous items for families.

"They've sponsored for years. They're just so generous, a lot of families wouldn't have Christmas without them," Meyer said.

Despite a number of generous donations, Someplace Safe outreach offices can still benefit from a few more items for the holidays.

Meyer indicated grocery and gas certificates are always welcome as well as miscellaneous household items such as laundry soap, dish soap, bed pillows and sheet sets. Items for infants and youth are needed as well.
