Avocados have the same thing going for them that olive oil does; healthy monounsaturated fatty acids. These are the "good fats," and they appear to lower bad cholesterol levels. Avocados help the body absorb more nutrients from other foods – the tomato in the same salad, for example.
Beans haven’t gotten the same media buzz as blueberries, but some beans have even more health-promoting antioxidants. They also have as much cholesterol-lowering fiber as oats and lots of lean protean. All of that is good for your heart. This category includes both dried and green beans.
Frozen blueberries are just as good as fresh and they’re easier to find in winter. For such tiny fruits, they deliver a huge nutritional punch. They have fiber, folic acid, vitamins C and E and antioxidants. They taste good and are low in calories.
The magic word with dark chocolate is flavonoids, the same kinds of antioxidants that make tea such a healthy drink. Research shows flavonoids have a role in helping lower blood pressure and in keeping your arteries from clogging—both good news for your heart. Only dark chocolate does the trick. And the more cocoa solids the better.
Kiwis are loaded with vitamin C, which also makes oranges a superfood. You can eat the skin of the kiwi, which is full of antioxidants.
Oats are kings of fiber and also deliver protein, potassium, magnesium and other minerals and phytonutrients, including antioxidants. This fiber also helps to stabilize the blood sugar.
Spinach is great for the eyes as its loaded with lutein.
The walnut's main claim to fame are their omega-3 fatty acids, which fight heart disease.
Yogurt is a live culture that fights bad bacteria, aids digestion, helps metabolize food and generally tunes your system up. It is also a good source of calcium and protein.
These 10 superfoods can transform your diet—and possibly your life.
