A nonprofit dental service that offers care for children covered by Minnesota Health Care Programs is making its second annual appearance in Breckenridge.

Two hygienists and a team from Hawley, Minn.,-based Apple Tree Dental are offering exam work, cleaning, x-rays and treatment on April 8 and 9.

"We're trying to reach kids that have a hard time getting into a dentist's office that takes their coverage," said Suzanne Horn, office manager. "We're trying to bridge that gap."

Children 12 years and under are eligible for the clinic. On average, staff treat about 40 clients per day.

Dental service to more than 390,000 people covered by Medicaid and Minnesota Care may be cut if a proposal by Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty is approved. About 400 adults in Wilkin County and 5,400 in Otter Tail County would be affected.

Apple Tree Dental is currently working closely with the Legislature to come up with an alternative.

While the clinic continues to provide service as usual, Horn said they will definitely have to cut programs if the current proposal goes through.

"There's going to be so many people without care," she said. "What's going to happen is they're going to go to the emergency room and get antibiotics or pain medication, but they're still going to have their problem."

The clinic will be held at Breckenridge Elementary School, Room 246, 810 Beede Ave., Breckenridge. To make an appointment, call 888-683-1038 or 218-483-1039 between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.
