The city council approved grant participation for each of the grants.
The first grant for $65,000 is slated for a fire prevention trailer.

The local match is only $3,000, Lambrecht added, in which $1,000 will be from private donations, and the remaining $2,000 will come from the Richland County Local Emergency Planning Committee.
Although the trailer will be stationed in Wahpeton, it will be used by fire departments throughout the county. There is an industry section to the trailer as well, Lambrecht said, to be used by industrial companies in Richland County for workforce training.
"This is a great opportunity to teach fire prevention, not only to our citizens in the county, but also to our industry throughout the county," Lambrecht said.
Application for the second grant was made due to the damage caused by the Industrial Plating Corporation, Inc., fire in 2008.
"We were able to acquire funds for the recovery of damaged hose, damaged equipment from all three of the fire departments," Lambrecht said.
The grant received was $24,000, only $1,000 less than the requested amount. "We didn't quite make the maximum, but we were very, very close," Lambrecht said.
A third grant, written for energy assistance from the North Dakota Department of Commerce, is a 50/50 matching grant.
"The grant will be to reside the [south side] fire station," Lambrecht said. "Right now we're paying $800-$1,000 worth of natural gas to heat our south side fire station per month, so it's very expensive."
Application made for the grant indicated the fire department was seeking $32,334, therefore, half of that amount was received —$16,167.
"I just wrote down the figures. Your grants got the city of Wahpeton $121,334, at really no cost to the citizens of Wahpeton. Thank you for doing that," said Alderman Martin Schmidt.
