Verne T. Stallman, 74, Mooreton, N.D., died Thursday, April 30, 2009, at his home after suffering with ill health for several years.

Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 5 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Mooreton, with Rev. Peter Anderl as celebrant.

Visitation will be held Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton, with a Christian Mother’s Rosary at 5:30 p.m. and a Prayer Service at 7 p.m. Visitation will also be held Tuesday at the church one hour prior to time of service.

Burial will be held at St. Anthony’s Catholic Cemetery, Mooreton. Military Honors will be conducted by the U.S. Marine Corps, MP Detachment, Wahpeton. Honorary Casketbearers will be “All Those Who Called Verne Friend.” Active Casketbearers will be Harold Ford, Vernon Bakken, Rich Stallman, Greg Stallman, Don Klosterman, and Terry Stallman.

Verne Thomas Stallman was born December 3, 1934, at Breckenridge, Minn., the son of Joseph and Louise (Klosterman) Stallman. He grew up on the family farm west of Mooreton. He started at a young age to operate machinery and work with his father and brothers. He attended school at Barney Township #1 and Barney City #2, and graduated from Wyndmere High School in 1953. On Jan. 4, 1954, he enlisted in the Marines Corps and was attached to the 4th Marine Regiment. After basic training, Verne attended Yeoman School and became a staff stenographer. Among his duties was Aide Decamp in court martial proceedings. He also assisted in compiling the history of the 4th Marines. He served at Camp Pendleton in San Diego, Calif., Japan and Hawaii. He obtained the rank of Sergeant and received Honorable Discharge in December 1956. He was proud to be a Marine. He returned home to farm with his family. On Jan. 13, 1961, Verne married Rena Mae Holm of Doran, Minn., at St. John’s Catholic Church in Wahpeton. They made their home on his parent’s farm. Three sons were born to them: Donald, Dean and James.

From 1964-1966, Verne was employed by the North Dakota Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service. He headquartered out of the Fargo office and traveled the state as a Bin Sight Supervisor. His assignment was to eliminate the government bin sights and sell the grain. When that was completed, he farmed full time and had a cattle feed lot operation with his brother Roger.

In 1998, he retired due to poor health and his son James took over the farming operation with his uncle Roger.

Verne’s interests were the love of the land, history and politics, where he served on various committees. He was a private pilot and flew North Dakota politicians to various destinations. Since retiring, Verne and Rena spent their winters at New Braunfels, Texas, learning about the German history there. Their summer weekends were at West Battle Lake, Minn., where they enjoyed fishing and visiting with friends. He was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Marine Corps League, Eagles, and served on the original planning board for Min-Dak Farmers Co-operative.

Verne is survived by: his wife of 48 years, Rena Stallman, rural Mooreton; his three sons, Dr. Donald (Kathryn Hinds) Stallman, Fargo, Dean Stallman, Chicago, Ill., James Stallman, rural Mooreton; four grandchildren, Caitlin, Christopher, Jamison and Jillian, all of Fargo; two brothers, David (Doris) Stallman, Chicago, Roger (Marilyn) Stallman, Barney, N.D.; his sisters-in-law, Arlene Stallman, Chicago and Lois Stallman, Fargo; his brother-in-law, Albert Holm, Dearborn Heights, Mich.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Louise; and two brothers, Thomas and Daniel.

Arrangements are entrusted to the care of the Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton.
