Mildred E. “Milly” Mahler, 91, Wahpeton, N.D., died Friday, May 29, 2009 at St. Francis Healthcare Campus, Breckenridge, Minn.
The Memorial Funeral Service will be 11 a.m., Monday, June 1 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Wahpeton, with Rev. Alan R. Werth officiating. There will be a time to visit with the family Sunday from 6-8 p.m. with a 7 p.m. Memorial Prayer Service at Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton.
Milly was born November 9, 1917, at Marion, N.D., the daughter of Nels and Josephine (Johnson) Anderson. Milly was baptized on April 27, 1941 and confirmed in 1945 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marion. Milly graduated from Marion High School and attended Valley City Teachers College where she obtained her teaching degree. She taught at Summit Township in Richland County, North Dakota. She was united in marriage to George Mahler, on December 18, 1942 at Watertown, NY. The couple lived and farmed near Fairmount, N.D., where they raised their seven children. George died January 3, 1976 and Milly continued to live on the farm for several years until she moved into Wahpeton. She worked at NDSCS for almost 20 years and in her retirement did volunteer work for St. Catherine’s Nursing Home and the Leach Home.
Milly was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Tyler, N.D., until moving her membership to Immanuel Lutheran Church, Wahpeton. While at St. John’s, she taught Sunday School for many years and was active in the Ladies Aid Society and Bible Study. She continued to be active in the church women’s groups and Bible Study after moving to Wahpeton. She was also a 4-H Leader and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
Milly is survived by her seven children: Thomas (Jing) Mahler, Glenville, NY; Nancy (Raymond) Garrett, Plainwell, MI; Barbara (Kevin) Vondal, Wahpeton; Janet DeBoer, Phoenix, AZ; Jeannie (Louis) Schaefer, Cathay, ND; Marlene Clarey, Lawrenceville, Georgia; Timothy (Hui) Mahler, Brooklyn Park, MN; 22 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband George, two grandchildren, Michael and Michelle Clarey and two brothers and three sisters.
