A public meeting offering Wilkin County residents a chance to air their concerns about any hazards threatening the area will be held at 7 p.m. on June 10 at the Wilkin County Recycling Center.

While the meeting is designed for hazards of all kinds, from ice storms to tornadoes, Wilkin County Emergency Manager Vern Woytassek believes it will be dominated by flood talk.

"Every concern, idea or suggestion will be noted and incorporated into the county mitigation plan that gets sent to the state and federal government," said Woytassek, who will be accompanied by Jennifer Olson, emergency operations planner at Northwest Regional Development Commission, at the meeting.

Any ideas residents have for the Wilkin County All Hazard Mitigation plan can help speed along the process and give the county a better shot at being noticed.

"It's very important that this mitigation plan is as comprehensive as we can possibly make it," said Woytassek.

After the meeting, the results will be incorporated into a plan that Woytassek hopes will be completed by the end of June.

The plan is a prerequisite toward attaining certain funding sources from Federal Emergency Management Agency. In 2000, the federal government passed legislation stating that all government entities which receive future hazard mitigation grant funding need to have such a plan in place.

Meetings will also be held in Kent at 7 p.m. on June 9 in the Kent Community Hall and in Rothsay at 7 p.m. on June 11 in the Rothsay Community Room. If you have questions or comments, contact Woytassek at 643-2326 or Olson at 218-745-6733.
