ND West Nile surveillance program starts
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Mosquitoes are under surveillance in North Dakota.
State health officials are starting to check for cases of the West Nile virus, which is carried by mosquitoes.
A statement from the Health Department says the activities include testing sick horses, dead birds and trapping and testing mosquitoes.
North Dakota reported 37 human West Nile cases last year and no deaths. Officials say the West Nile season peaks in late July or early August.
Health officials say most people with the virus have no major symptoms. More severe infection could lead to a high fever, severe headache and eventually death.
Officials urge people to use insect repellents and wearing protective clothing.
