On a windy day for golf, the Wahpeton Huskies and every other team at the state golf tournament had to play their best to avoid problems.

Dakota Winds golf course near Hankinson lived up to it's name Tuesday and the Huskies played solid rounds to end the first day in second place.

The Huskies shot 328 for the day, and trail the Fargo South Bruins by only six shots for the top spot.

"Fargo South continued their dominance of class A golf, but the Huskies gave them a good run," head coach Jeff Ralph said. "We were one of only two teams with all golfers under 90. Our boys battled very windy conditions."

Derek Dionne and Dylan Ferrell each carded 80 for their rounds to lead Wahpeton.

Dionne and Ferrell are tied for seventh place individually after the first day of the tournament.

"Derek showed why he’s one of the top golfers in the state with his 80," Ralph said. "Derek didn’t feel like he was on top of his game, but still managed to finish with an eight over par in difficult conditions. Dylan was on the verge of posting a really good score, but two bad holes hurt his score."

Dillon Meyer (83), Ryan Ames (85), Dustin Thompson (87) and Jake Richels (88) all shot under 90 to help Wahpeton end the first day of the tournament in second place.

Ralph said, " All six boys felt like they worked hard to post their score, but they also felt like they could play better on day two."

The tournament concludes Wednesday at Dakota Winds golf course.
