Superintendent Mike Connell said he sought to fill the vacant position internally with Sandy Devillers, the middle school choir teacher, moving to a full-time position. Devillers turned down the position, however, staying at a part-time status.
“So, we’re advertising not only internally, but with newspapers and regional placement agencies as we speak,” Connell said. “This is not a good time to be looking for music teachers. I’ve had one call from Minnesota, but we’ll see what happens.”

• The district is asking for the public’s help to install new playground equipment at the elementary schools. The installation will take place on Thursday, June 11 and Friday, June 12 if the additional day is needed. Connell asks those interested in volunteering to arrive at Central Elementary at 10 a.m. and bring tools such as wheelbarrows, ratchets, levels, hammers and shovels. Connell expects the Kiwanis Club and the district to provide lunch for those who volunteer.
• Connell informed the school board that the city of Wahpeton has chosen not to enter into a cost sharing agreement for a drainage project at the middle school. Board member Laurie Christensen said the board now has a few options: to do nothing, pay for the entire project, cost-share with property owners in the area of the project or pay only for a sump pump.
“We’re kind of back to square one,” Connell said. He added that he expects at the board’s next Finance Committee meeting that a local property owner will attend and present information on how the district may be able to get some contributions from other property owners that would be directly affected by the project.
• The school board also canvassed votes cast from the Tuesday, June 2 election. Harris Bailey will join the board again after seven years away from the board. He filled a city seat from 1993-2002. Also, Susan Rittenour and Kris Tedrow will spend another term on the school board. It is Rittenour's first election to the board and Tedrow's third term.
