Six members of Breckenridge Girl Scout Troop 296 are very close to earning their Silver Award, an honor that has taken them two years to accomplish. But in order to capture it, they must first create 40 blankets that will later be donated to area family service agencies.

"It's a big accomplishment for girls our age to finish their special project," said Kjerstin Engebretson, 15. "Most people probably don't know about it, but it takes many years of planning and doing different projects in order to finish it."

Each fleece blanket is handmade and affixed with a sewing label that states, "Lovingly created for you by Troop 296." The two-toned blankets are intended for toddlers, 'tweens or teenagers as a way to offer comfort, said Jacie Jawaski, 14.

"It's really nice to be able to help people out, especially if they have to go to someone else's house," she said.

Mostly, though, the tight-knit group of girls felt the need to help out others, and the blankets were a good way to fulfill the 40-hour work requirement on the project. On Friday, the girls visited Richland and Wilkin County family service agencies to learn more about the organizations. Before working on the blankets, the girls wrote grant request letters and have since been rewarded $800 for their efforts.

Several leadership and volunteer projects precede the Silver Award, which is the final step of the hierarchical program. Many hours of work are involved to achieve what they describe as a learning curve on the path to becoming a better person.

"It's not only about getting the badges or something, but being together with friends and just learning to become better women in the future," said Engebretson.

The project is also a great way to intensify the relationship between the girls, who have been Girl Scouts since first grade.

"It's a long bonding experience for all of them," said Colleen Engebretson, co-leader.

The group will determine when to deliver the blankets after Monday.
