Wahpeton wins tournament title

Wahpeton's amateur baseball team won the championship of a tournament they hosted Saturday at John Randall Field.

Wahpeton defeated the Fargo Spartans 11-2 in the title game to finish the one-day tournament 2-0.

In the game played Saturday night, Wahpeton scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Andrew Lovgren, Luke Holkup, Nick Tollefson, Evan Berndt and Josh Meuhler all scored in the inning.

Fargo committed four errors in the first two innings, and Wahpeton had nine hits on the night.

Fargo scored two runs in the top of the second inning off Wahpeton starter Lovgren, but Wahpeton still led 5-2.

They got another run in the bottom of the second inning to take a 6-2 lead after Brock Enderson crossed the plate.

In the third inning, Berndt pitched for Wahpeton and held Fargo scoreless the rest of the game.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Wahpeton added five more runs.

Lovgren, Jared Johnson, Holkup, Tollefson and Lester Gordon all scored in the inning.

Fargo got two runners on in the sixth inning, but the Wahpeton pitching and defense kept the Spartans off the board.

In the top of the seventh inning, Fargo got a runner on second base.

But, Berndt caught a line-drive back to the mound for the final out.

Wahpeton had advanced to the championship game with a 2-1 win over the Moorhead, Minn., Miners.

Wahpeton hosts Fairmount Saturday at 5 p.m. at John Randall Field.

6-20, vs Fairmount, 5 p.m.

6-24, @ Valley City, 7:35 p.m.

6-27, @ Kindred, 6 p.m.

7-11, vs Valley City, 2 p.m.

7-21, vs Kindred, 6:30 p.m.

7-26, @ Fairmount, 4 p.m.

8-1, Regional Tournament @ Valley City.
