Wallace "Wally" Mitzel, 69, rural Battle Lake, Minn., died Monday, June 22, 2009.

The funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Friday, June 26 at Zion Lutheran Church of Amor, Minn., with the Rev. Jim Gronbeck and Intern Pastor Dean Grier officiating.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, June 25 with a prayer service at 8 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church of Amor; visitation continues one hour prior to the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials.

Glende-Nilson Funeral Home, Battle Lake, is in charge of arrangements.

Wallace “Wally” Marvin Mitzel was born Sept. 29, 1939, in Breckenridge, Minn., to parents Emil and Lillian (Strubel) Mitzel. Wally grew up in Great Bend, N.D., until the age of 3 when his father died. He moved with his family to Wahpeton, N.D., where he graduated from Wahpeton High School. He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in the Mediterranean and Guantanamo. After Wally was honorably discharged, he was united in marriage to Arlene Stein. To this union three children were born.

On Dec. 19, 1981, Wally was united in marriage to Millie Sedler. He became the proud father of three additional children. The couple made their home in Wahpeton until 1987 when they moved to their present residence on Deer Lake.

Wally considered all friends as family. He was quick to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it. His generosity touched everyone who knew him. He was a hard worker and liked to keep his hands busy. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family.

Survivors include: his wife, Millie Mitzel of rural Battle Lake; six children, Fawn (Jim) Alstadt of Wendell, Minn., Karie (Tim) Becker of Waukesha, Wis., Wade (Heather) Mitzel of Kentucky, Jerrod (Angie) Sedler of Elbow Lake, Minn., Wyatt (Becky) Mitzel of West Fargo, N.D., and Wanda (Tim) Walsh of Shakopee, Minn.; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Leona (Jerry) Wilson of Virginia; and one sister-in-law, Charlotte Harris of Wahpeton.

Wally is preceded in death by: his parents; two brothers, Paul and Herman; one sister, Lorain; and a baby daughter, Mary.

Lake attire is welcome to be worn for the service.
