Otto Bremer recently announced its May 2009 grant recipients. The funding Three River Crisis Center received will be spread out over two years.
"We contract [two] counselors with the Fargo-Moorhead Rape and Abuse Crisis Center twice a week. One comes down on Thursday and one comes down on Friday," said Susan Rittenour, Three Rivers Crisis Center director. The counselors are available from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. for one hour of counseling per client, or group therapy.

Secondary victims are those who are directly affected by any of these acts. For example, counselors may deal with a mother whose teenage daughter was a victim of date rape, Rittenour said.
Through this grant, "we are able to offer [counseling] to our clients free of charge," Rittenour added.
With counseling, victims of these crimes learn they are not at fault, which is ingrained into their minds, Rittenour said. They learn to seek help, be independent of anyone who was or is in control of them, and how to recognize unhealthy situations.
In 2008, the Three Rivers Crisis Center served 135 clients of domestic assault, sexual assault and child sexual abuse. While the number varies year to year, Three Rivers Crisis Center typically helps more than 100 clients per year, Rittenour said.
The crisis center also helps children through Kids Connection, an exchange center for children and their parents, located on Dakota Avenue in Wahpeton.
"In 2008, Kids Konnection facilitated 331 monitored exchanges and 314 on-site supervised visits," Rittenour said. This year it came out to 706 hours of supervision, she added.
