Wahpeton splits with Sisseton

Wahpeton Legion Post 20 split two games Monday night at John Randall Field against Sisseton, S.D.

Wahpeton won the first game 13-5, while Sisseton claimed the second game 11-7.

In the first game, Jeremy Bontjes started on the mound for Wahpeton.

Sisseton got a run in the top of the first, but Wahpeton came back with six runs in the bottom of the first.

Wahpeton sent 11 batters to the plate in the first inning and got singles from Trevor Thiele and Kyle Rinnels and a double by Tyler Mauch.

Sisseton also walked two batters and committed two errors in the inning.

Leading 6-1, Bontjes got out of the top of the second quickly.

In the bottom of the second, Wahpeton added to their lead.

Ryan Sheeley walked and advanced to third base on two Sisseton wild pitches.

An infield hit by Evan Schreiner scored Sheeley and Wahpeton led 7-1.

Sisseton got three runs in the top of the third inning to pull to within 7-4, but Wahpeton got two of those runs back in the bottom of the third.

Preston Kath walked and stole second base.

He advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a double by Sheeley.

Justin Formaneck reached on an error and Sheeley scored on the play.

With a 9-4 lead, Bontjes stuck out the side in the top of the fourth inning.

In the top of the fifth, Sisseton got a run to pull to within 9-5, but Wahpeton did not allow them another run.

In the bottom of the fifth, Post 20 scored again.

Cody Ziegler and Formaneck reached base and Schreiner drove them both in on a hit.

Schreiner scored on a hit by Kyle Rinnels and Wahpeton led 12-5.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Zach Nordick drew a bases-loaded walk to score Kath and Wahpeton led 13-5.

Kath came in to pitch the seventh inning and struck out one as Wahpeton won the game.

"After a long road trip, it was nice to see us jump on them right away," coach Chris Kappes said. "Jeremy pitched well for us again, we hit the ball and made plays behind him."

Evan Schreiner started the second game for Post 20.

Sisseton again got a run in the top of the first inning.

In the bottom of the first, Wahpeton came back with two runs and had a 2-1 lead.

But, Sisseton got four runs in the top of the second, four more in the top of the fourth and another run in the top of the fifth, taking a 10-2 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, Wahpeton clawed their way back into the game.

Mauch singled and stole second base.

Bontjes, Kath and Thiele reached on walks.

Mauch scored on the bases-loaded walk to Thiele.

Sheeley got a hit to score Bontjes, while Kath and Thiele scored on wild pitches by Sisseton.

In all, Wahpeton scored five runs and trailed 10-7.

Sisseton added another run in the top of the seventh and Wahpeton was held scoreless for their final two at-bats.

"The way the second game was going, we could have just given up," Kappes said. "But I was proud of the team, the way they battled back and fought back into the game. We had a chance to steal the second game."

Ziegler replaced Schreiner on the mound in the fifth inning and gave up only two runs in his three innings of work for Post 20.

Wahpeton has a double header in West Fargo Thursday night, before returning home to face Breckenridge Saturday at 8 p.m.
