Proper care for contact lenses

When wearing contacts, there are general tips to follow that can increase your success.

• Always consult your eye care professional before sleeping with your contacts in.

Many lenses are not designed to be slept in. Sleeping with your contact lenses can adversely affect the health of your eyes. Not all people can wear lenses overnight, even if they are meant for sleeping in. You have eight times the risk of serious eye infection by sleeping in lenses not designed for extended wear.

• Maintain a current pair of glasses that can be worn when your eyes are tired or an eye infection is present.

I also recommend wearing glasses right away in the morning, and in the evening to give your eyes a rest from contacts. Allow your eyes to be exposed to more oxygen.

• Hair spray, deodorants and other aerosol products can coat a lens. Keep your eyes tightly closed when using these products or apply the lenses after using these products.

• If the lens has dirt, an eyelash or other foreign substance on it, remove the lens, thoroughly clean, rinse and reapply the lens. If the discomfort persists after lens removal, contact your eye care professional.

• If the lenses are difficult to remove from your eye, use rewetting drops to loosen the lens adhesion before lens removal.

• Replace your lenses with a new pair as often as recommended by your eye care professional. Old lenses can cause discomfort, decreased vision and may adversely affect your eye health.

• Keep all appointments with your eye care professional, even when contacts aren't causing any problems.

Routine visits help prevent problems. Only a thorough examination by your eye care professional can determine how well your eyes are responding to contacts.

Following these guidelines can help ensure that you will be able to wear contacts for years to come in a comfortable and healthy manner.
