Anyone with an interest in Minnesota or Dakota Territory history, Civil War history, or history of the American West is encouraged to consider becoming a member of this exciting group. The new 2nd US Sharpshooters/Fifth Minnesota Volunteer Infantry unit will use Fort Abercrombie State Historic Site near Wahpeton as their historic base of operations.
The actual units that the new 2nd U.S. Sharpshooters/5th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry will portray were stationed at Fort Abercrombie from March to November 1862 (Company D, 5th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry), and from November 1862 to May 1863 (Company A, 2nd United States Sharpshooters).

This reenactment unit will work with the Friends of Fort Abercrombie to promote efforts to preserve and enhance the state historic site on the Red River of the North. The goals of this new organization is to inform the public about the role of Fort Abercrombie (1861-1877) and its personnel, especially regarding the Dakota Conflict of 1862, as well as during and after the Civil War.
