Celebrate the Fourth at home

Although I like traveling, I always look forward to spending the Fourth of July in our own community. I enjoy welcoming tourists as well as our local residents to the zoo. Hundreds of out-of-town folks will visit the zoo, carousel and park tomorrow. We encourage everyone to have fun in Wahpeton during the day visiting, shopping, eating, playing outdoors and then encourage them to stay for the fireworks display in the park.

I used to be stationed with the U.S. Army in Fort Belvoir, Va. The Washington, D.C., July 4 celebration was a spectacular event, as you can imagine, with the fireworks and the military band playing patriotic music synchronized with every color burst.

Not to pale in comparison, the Wahpeton fireworks has a different allure. There is a “Terry Redlin” flavor to the event while folks gather for the baseball game, eat hotdogs and wait until dark when the “oohs and awwws” begin. I love to be here on the Fourth of July!

Thank you to the the sponsors of this year's display who will be listed in a later column due to inclusion of latter donations. A big thanks to Connie Raguse of Wahpeton Parks and Recreation as she works hard to coordinate and send request letters to area businesses and organizations.

Also, thanks to the Wahpeton Fire Department and the many who help make the fireworks display happen.

Please remember that all donations are most appreciated and very necessary for this hometown event to occur. When the hats are passed, please consider a donation. Every dollar helps!

So come on down, carry a blanket or lawn chair and set up for a nice evening. This is just another reason to appreciate our hometown.

KATHY DIEKMAN is the director at Chahinkapa Zoo in Wahpeton.
