Disease-carrying mosquitoes turn up in Twin Cities
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — The Metropolitan Mosquito Control District says a new disease-carrying mosquito has arrived in the Twin Cities area.
The Japanese rock pool mosquito can carry the West Nile virus and LaCrosse encephalitis.
It was recently discovered in Burnsville, Cottage Grove, Eagan, Eureka Township, Lake Elmo, Lakeville and Savage.
The mosquito was accidentally imported into the U.S. several years ago and has been spreading ever since. It was already established in five southeastern Minnesota counties.
Experts say the best ways to prevent being bitten are to cover open skin and wear bug repellant outside.
