County shoulder widening project plans in place

A plan by the Wilkin County Highway Department to expand the shoulder of a road at the former Breckenridge Dam site is complete, and the office will be accepting quotes over the next few weeks, said highway engineer Tom Richels. Bids will be under $100,000.

"Once I get the plan approved, I'll send out the quotes," he said.

The announcement was made at a Wilkin County Commission meeting on Tuesday. Last month, the commission allowed the highway department to temporarily halt plans for a bridge widening due to a design conflict with the state bridge engineer.

Interstate Engineering, Wahpeton, is going to bill the department quarterly for the engineering costs related to the bridge design.

Richels also updated the group on other recent developments, such as the progress of repair work on Highway 210. He talked to a district engineer from the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MNDOT), Detroit Lakes, and asked if work could speed up due to stimulus projects. No such luck.

"According to him, it's still scheduled for 2012," said Richels, who suggested the commission contact Rep. Paul Marquart, DFL-Dilworth and Sen. Keith Langseth, DFL-Glyndon. "I know of at least five culverts that are hallowed out there underneath the road."

Some progress has also been made on an underpass near Kent, Minn., that had been closed since March. MNDOT, Detroit Lakes, is paying the Wilkin County highway department $90,000 to do a road overlay.
