The road to Breckenridge has been long for the Rev. Ryan Drevlow, the new pastor at Grace Lutheran Church.

Drevlow arrived in Breckenridge with his wife, Laura, on July 12 from St. Louis, Mo.

"I have spent a lot of time in small towns," said Drevlow. "I always felt comfortable in a small community. I like that people know each other."

Drevlow grew up in Maddock, N.D., where his father was a dairy farmer. After his father changed jobs the Drevlow family, which included six children, moved to Twin Valley, Minn., spent a short time in Wisconson, then back to North Dakota.

"I consider Bismarck home. I've been all over," Drevlow said. Drevlow has been all over the Midwest as well as parts of the world. He has studied in England at Cambridge University and went on a mission trip to China.

Drevlow began his education at the University of North Dakota where he completed three years in the music education program and finished his undergraduate degree at Minot State University. A desire to sing and teach drove Drevlow to become an educator.

"I had a strong sensation that God wanted more out of me," Drevlow said.

The path to becoming a member of the church began when Drevlow was in the eighth grade.

"When I was confirmed, people began to encourage me to go into the field and become a pastor," Drevlow said. "The biggest reason I'm here is because of my mom and dad constantly encouraging me and I aspired to be like my father. He wasn't a pastor, but a powerful person."

The next stop for Drevlow was attending seminary school in St. Louis, Mo. His vicarage call placed him in Phoenix, Ariz., where he met his wife, Laura. After completing the vicarage call, Drevlow returned to St. Louis to finish school.

Now in Breckenridge, the 29-year-old pastor is positive about his new parish.

"I like to joke with my parishioners that I'm a little green behind the ears. This is my first parish, first call," Drevlow said.

"Ministry is a big word and I don't know what that includes yet."

Drevlow looks forward to applying a new perspective on how to bring people into the church.

"The problem we face in a church is people not seeing the need to go to church and bringing those people back," Drevlow said.

"I think it's important to have pastors and leaders to help guide parishioners in their lives."

An enthusiasm for the outdoors and farming is another reason Drevlow likes the Red River Valley.

Anticipation of being recognized in the community and getting to know people is exciting, said Drevlow.

"Being called to this position is not a burden or difficult," said Drevlow. "I'm just excited to be in the community."
