Wahpeton Parks and Recreation Director Wayne Beyer said 220 kids from around the area attended the Phil Hansen football camp on Monday at the North Dakota State College of Science practice fields.

"We were happy with it. It was a good experience for the kids," Beyer said.

Hansen, a former defensive end with the Buffalo Bills and Detroit Lakes, Minn., resident brought the camp to Wahpeton for the third consecutive year Monday.

"Football is just the means. The real message is to learn sportsmanship and remain physically active," Hansen said. "People have said I should think about being a football coach. But I feed my football fetish by running these camps and doing some officiating."

The kids were divided into two groups.

A 4 p.m. camp was for boys and girls aged 5-9, while a 6 p.m. camp was held for 10-13-year-olds.

The 11-year National Football League veteran and former North Dakota State University player also conducts youth camps in Fargo and Detroit Lakes.

The kids each got a t-shirt, hat, water bottle and other free items before the camp.

At the conclusion of each session, the campers posed for pictures with Hansen.

Coaches and players from NDSCS and Wahpeton High School assisted in running the camp.
