Margaret Youngquist Hammer, 85

A graveside service for Margaret Youngquist Hammer, Madison, S.D., formerly of Wahpeton, N.D., will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 22, at Fairview Cemetery, Wahpeton.

Margaret died at the Madison Community Hospital, Madison, S.D, on Feb. 18, 2009 at the age of 85.

Margaret Maxine Mary Ann Youngquist Hammer was born on March 1, 1923 at Wahpeton, N.D., to Herbert and Anna (Lehman) Youngquist.

Margaret grew up and attended school in Wahpeton, graduating from Wahpeton High School in 1941. She married William (Bill) Hammer at Breckenridge, Minn., on Oct. 10, 1942. The Hammers moved to South Dakota in the late 1940s, living in Huron, Miller, and Madison where Bill pursued his career as an aircraft mechanic until his death in 1970 in an airplane crash.

Margaret was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and was named one of South Dakota’s “50 Outstanding Citizens” in 1992 for her charitable work. She babysat in her home for many years and was well known in the area craft-show circuit for her handmade dolls and stuffed animals.

She is survived by: one son, John (Alice) of Madison, S.D. and two daughters, Carol (Al) Byington of Chesterfield, Mo., and Mary (Jim) Sutton of Ortonville, Mich. She is also survived by: eight grandchildren, two great grandchildren, one brother, Herbert (Rose) Youngquist of Wahpeton, a daughter-in-law, Janelle Hammer of Oklahoma, and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by: a son, Michael (Jannelle), a brother, Garfield (Vernice) Youngquist, and her parents.

The family has asked that contributions be made to the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society in Sioux Falls, S.D., in memory of Margaret, her love of animals and her years of contributions to the well being of the animals there.

Arrangements are with Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton.
