Artist series features vocalists, cello quartet

An a cappella "band," a tenor and a 50s-style vocalist group are stopping in Wahpeton this year as part of the Twin Town Artist Series, an annual event that tries to encompass the best music of the region.

Fans of Rosemary Clooney, Patti Page and Connie Francis will likely be drawn to Girl Singers of the Hit Parade, who will perform Sept. 17 inside the Stern Cultural Center at North Dakota State College of Science.

On Nov. 2, Robert Robinson, a Minneapolis-based tenor who toured with pianist Lorie Line for 15 years, will also be singing here. Robinson has performed with Aretha Franklin, Jermaine Jackson, Andrae Crouch and others. The director of the Twin Cities Community Gospel Choir, Robinson is a two-time Minnesota Music Award Winner for Best Gospel Artist and Group.

"His voice is incredibly high, he is definitely a tenor," laughed Corrine Romereim, vice chairman of the Twin Town Artist Series.

His act is one of many that Romereim and her board intensely reviews before trying to book them.

The Rastrelli Cello Quartet, a Russian group formed in Germany, will also be playing a selection of pieces on April 15, 2010. Although most associate the cello with classical music, the quartet's repertoire consists entirely of transcriptions not intended for the cello and plays everything from baroque to rock.

Regardless, Romereim said people shouldn't be afraid of the classical style.

"This is something so unique to our area," she said.

The final group to perform, Home Free, will feature their eclectic mix of comedy and four-part harmony on May 11, 2010. A self-proclaimed "vocal band," the Mankato, Minn.-based group sings a selection of familiar hits such as "Can't Help Falling In Love" and pens their own songs.
