On May 11, 1951, John married Carmen E. LeMier in Prescott, Ariz.

John spent many years in the newspaper business in Garrison, Prescott, Detroit Lakes, Minn., and Zanesville, Ohio, before starting a 27 year teaching career at North Dakota State College of Science, Wahpeton, from where he retired in 1989 as chairman of the Graphic Arts Department. Upon retirement, John and Carmen moved to Bellevue, where John spent 12 more years working as public relations director and high school coordinator for Omaha College of Health Careers, Omaha, Neb., and five more years working at Metropolitan Community College in Omaha, retiring again in 2006.

Active in the Boy Scouts of America as a Scoutmaster, John also was co-founder of Boys’ Club, Inc., of Detroit Lakes, Minn., the first Boy’s Club in Minnesota to become affiliated with Boy’s Clubs of America. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge and Eagles Club.

John was also a member of Thanksgiving Lutheran Church in Bellevue.

John enjoyed his later years immensely. He and Carmen traveled and visited friends and family across the country. Family was very important to John — he loved nothing more than spending time with them. He was very proud of his daughter and son’s accomplishments and attributed them to a good upbringing. John adored his grandchildren. His “Miss America” and “Best Buddy” brought happiness to his heart every minute he spent with them. The countless hours spent attending dance recitals, volleyball matches, basketball and baseball games were always important to him.

He is survived by: wife, Carmen E. Carlson; daughter, Jacolyn Dee Leibold and son-in-law Rodney; son, John David Carlson and daughter-in-law Brenda; two grandchildren, Kelsey Marie Carlson and John Austin Carlson; three sisters, Mrs. Clare (Paul M.) Angell, Bismarck, N.D.; Mrs. Donna (William E.) Peterson, Bismarck; Mrs. Marlene (Ronald E.) Erickson, Garrison; and many nieces and nephews.
