Pay cuts could reduce ND child support payments
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota’s child support agency says divorced parents who lose their jobs may be able to get a quick reduction in their child support payments.
Enforcement director Mike Schwindt says parents who are paying child support and lose their jobs need to notify the support agency about their problems right away.
Schwindt says a parent’s case is put on the fast track if the parent asks for a reduced support payment because he or she has lost a job or had a cutback in work hours.
State officials are expecting a possible increase in requests because of the closing of the Bobcat construction equipment factory in Bismarck. The plant is shutting down by the end of the year.
Schwindt says people who get laid off may also be eligible for state job training, health insurance for their children and help with paying winter heating bills.
