Huskies tennis team runs into strong competition

The Wahpeton boys tennis team had a busy weekend.

They played in tournaments in Fargo and West Fargo on Friday and Saturday and played a match in Grand Forks Monday that was rescheduled from earlier this year.

Williston downed Wahpeton Friday, 5-0.

"We played Williston last year and both of us only lost two players and last year we weren't in many of the matches," coach Kyle Christianson said. "This year we were in all the singles matches and the doubles matches were closer than the scores appeared. Williston's varsity is all seniors and is currently second in the Western Dakota Conference."

Wahpeton also lost 5-0 to Bismarck Century.

"It ended up being a long day for the kids after playing Shanley on Thursday then Williston already on Friday," Christianson said. "They started to look a little tired. Scott Kompelien played well but just wasn't able to string together points and get the momentum on his side."

On Saturday, the Huskies participated in the West Fargo Invitational and finished 12th in the 15 team field.

Grand Forks Red River won the event.

The Huskies battled Red River Monday in a makeup match in Grand Forks.

Red River beat Wahpeton 9-0.

"We played the best team in the state. They have won the state team championship for at least eight straight years," Christianson said. "Our No. 1doubles team played very well taking one of the best doubles teams in the state to a third set. They battled back from 2-5 in the second set to win the set and go into a third set tie-break."

The busy week continues for the Huskies, as they host Grand Forks Central Tuesday afternoon at the North Dakota State College of Science courts.
