Local Maurices joins national campaign
by Erin C. Hevern • Daily News
The Maurices location in Wahpeton has joined more than 700 stores nationwide in a campaign to support animal shelters and undernourished pets.
Although they've been host to "Rescues and Runways" since Sept. 1, the big event will have models taking the stage Tuesday, Sept. 22 at Town Centre Square.
Twenty models will walk the runway in Maurices apparel, but not without a furry friend by their side.
"The humane society will be at the fashion show, and the animals up for adoption will be walking the runway with them," said Jen Kolbe, Maurices manager.
The humane society has three dogs and nine cats up for adoption, as of Thursday.
"The fact that the campaign is nationwide is just wonderful because all humane societies and rescue shelters can use that help now with so many pets being abandoned, turned loose and such," said Carolyn Goerger, project manager.
Throughout the month of September, Maurices will continue to sponsor a pet supply drive and sell a limited edition charm that benefits the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).
"It's a token of unconditional love," said Vivian Behrens, senior vice president and chief marketing officer. "Women can wear half of the charm, while the other half of the charm is worn by their pet."
The ASPCA will receive a minimum donation of $50,000 from Maurices stores across the country and have a goal to raise more than $100,000.
Considering the hardships felt by pet owners and animal shelters throughout the country, Kolbe said pets need help more than ever.
"If people can't afford to feed themselves their pets aren't going to get fed either," she said. "We hope to keep this an annual event."
Kolbe encourages pet supply donations at the event Tuesday and through the end of September in the store. Customers will receive a 20 percent off coupon for each item donated, she said.
