Tribal suicide prevention program saved
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Sen. Byron Dorgan says tribal and federal officials have worked out a process for the Standing Rock Sioux to get money for suicide prevention programs.
The North Dakota Democrat says the tribe will apply to the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration for an emergency grant, and that agency Administrator Eric Borderick says it will be processed on a priority basis.
The tribe earlier was denied a $1.5 million suicide prevention grant that would help keep five workers on the job in communities along the North Dakota-South Dakota border.
Tribal Chairman Ron His Horse Is Thunder says that while the emergency grant application is being processed, the tribe will provide interim funding for several weeks to ensure the suicide prevention programs are not interrupted.
