Dorgan: Matchup with Hoeven would be ’major’

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — Sen. Byron Dorgan says a Senate campaign pitting himself against Gov. John Hoeven would be “a major race.”

Dorgan made the comment in an e-mail to potential financial supporters of his Senate re-election bid next year.

The Democratic senator notes in the e-mail that Republicans are trying to coax Hoeven into leaving in the middle of his governor term to run for the Senate, and Dorgan asks supporters to help him boost his donations. He says a matchup of himself and Hoeven could be a “tough race.”

A spokesman for Hoeven says the governor has no comment.

Hoeven in August said he had not set a timeline for deciding whether to challenge Dorgan, who has held his Senate seat since 1992.
