NDSCS to offer basketball coaches clinic, October 21
WAHPETON, N.D. – The North Dakota State College of Science (NDSCS) men’s basketball staff will be hosting a coach’s clinic at the Clair T. Blikre Activities Center on Wednesday, Oct. 21, starting at 3:30 p.m.
The event is a chance for coaches from North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota to hear and learn from others at the highest amateur levels.
There will be presentations by three head coaches at the collegiate level, as well as an open NDSCS practice beginning at 3:30 p.m.
The first speaker, Dakota State University (DSU) head coach, Gary Garner, will begin at 5:30 p.m.
Garner has amassed over 300 wins, and will be entering his first season at DSU, in Madison, S.D.
Garner has experience in both the professional and college ranks. He has been a head coach at Southeast Missouri State, Drake University, Missouri Southern, and Fort Hayes State prior to his time at Dakota State.
His 1995-96 Fort Hayes team won the National Championship for NCAA Division II with a perfect record of 34-0, he also led Southeast Missouri State to the NCAA Tournament in 2000.
The second speaker is a Southern Conference member and University of Tennessee Chattanooga head coach, John Shulman.
The Mocs were a participant in last season’s NCAA Tournament, facing UCONN in round one.
Chattanooga has been to the NCAA Tournament twice under Shulman’s guidance as head coach, and have won the Southern Conference Championship three times.
Shulman was named Tennessee Sports Writer Association Coach of the Year in 2005.
Overall, Shulman’s teams have been to the Southern Conference Championship game seven times.
The final speaker is University of North Dakota (UND) Head Coach, Brian Jones.
Jones is in his third season as the head coach of the Fighting Sioux, overseeing their move to Division I.
Under Jones tutelage, the Sioux have won the North Central Conference Championship for the first time since 2002.
Overall, they were 15-15 for the season. Prior to his time at UND, Jones was an assistant coach for University of Iowa and Southwest Missouri State under Steve Alford.
