ND regulators set hearing on railroad whistles

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota regulators have set a hearing to explore whether trains should be required to blow their horns at seven private, rural railroad crossings.

This year, the Legislature approved a law banning railroad locomotives from sounding their horns at private crossings. Landowners who want a warning may ask the Public Service Commission to require trains to blow their whistles.

The Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad has asked the PSC to consider whether there should be a warning requirement at specific crossings at Williston, Mandan, Hebron and five other rural communities.

Commissioner Brian Kalk says the request will be reviewed. Kalk says he’s concerned about the safety implications of the request. The PSC will hold a public hearing in Bismarck on Dec. 1.
