Committee approves repairs in Briarwood

The Wahpeton Public Works and Safety Committee approved making street repairs to 3 1/2 Street North in Briarwood Trailer Court at a Tuesday meeting. Property owner Richard Pierce had a written letter requesting the repairs. Typically, the property owner would repair the street, but through discussion, the committee decided due to the status of the street, the repairs are necessary. The park is platted as a part of the city.
"The committee felt [the street's] status is close enough that although they're in question on the status, that we repair the street," said Public Works Director Randy Nelson. "The condition is poor and it simply hadn't risen to the top of the list yet. It had not been prioritized for immediate repair."
With the exception of 3 1/2 Street North, the other streets in Briarwood Court are in good condition, Nelson said.
The committee also approved an increase in reimbursement for mailboxes damaged by the city snowplows. The current maximum reimbursement is $50.
"There are instances where property owners felt that [$50] is insufficient," Nelson said. "The committee suggested it be raised to $75, provided the owner install a mailbox post compliant with city standard... set back a little ways back of the curb, which would minimize possibilities of future damage."
Nelson said the city plows up to the face of the curb and there are 6 inches separating the plow to the mailbox post.
The city council will vote on both issues at the Monday, Oct. 19 meeting.
In other business:
• Two awnings above businesses on Dakota Avenue will be permitted by ordinance to stay where they are. They are currently less than 8 feet above the sidewalk, which is the minimum per ordinance. But, the ordinance allows this on Dakota Avenue only.
• The committee approved a supplemental agreement for Interstate Engineering's services for Phase A part 1. This is an amendment to Interstate Engineering's agreement with the city to provide construction and engineering services.
