Wahpeton ran into a strong Grand Forks Red River volleyball team Thursday and lost 3-0.

"Red River is a very tough team. But we made it very easy for them. We gave them free balls," coach Jodi Kleven said. "They passed, set and pounded the ball down. We just could not get the pass to the setter. The passers either passed the ball right on the net or over to the other side."

In the first game, the Rough Riders built a quick 10-5 lead.

Katelyn Kleven and Kelsey Kleven got kills to narrow the gap, but Red River was too strong at the net.

Morgan Burrer served an ace for Wahpeton and the Huskies tried to stay in the game.

But Red River went on a 5-0 run near the end of the set and won 25-14.

In the second game, the Rough Riders jumped out to a 7-1 lead.

Katelyn Kleven got a kill early in the set and four Red River hitting errors allowed the Huskies to get back in the game.

Wahpeton got a close as trailing 9-8 before Red River went on a 5-2 run, with Wahpeton's two points coming off a kill and an ace by the Huskies' Jocie Fisher.

The Rough Riders closed out the set on a 7-3 run and a 25-17 win.

Red River controlled most of the third set.

The Rough Riders jumped out to a quick 9-4 run, with three of the Huskies' first four points coming off Red River hitting errors.

Kelsey Kleven and Katelyn Kleven accounting for the first two Wahpeton points but a 10-5 Red river lead.

A kill by Jordyn Braun later in the set brought Wahpeton to within a 11-7 score.

But Red River outscored Wahpeton 14-2 down the stretch and put the game away 25-9, to secure the win.

"If you look at the scores of the first two games, if we could have played more offense during the match, the match may have ended up differently," coach Kleven said. "At some point we have to be able to put a whole match together one set at a time."

Wahpeton travels to Grand Forks Monday to take on Central high school at 7 p.m.
