LeRoy Bontjes, 81, Breckenridge, Minn., died Friday, Oct. 16, 2009, at St. Catherine’s Living Center, Wahpeton, N.D.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21 at Breckenridge Lutheran Church, Breckenridge, with the Rev. Mark Manning officiating.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20 with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at Joseph Vertin & Sons Funeral Home, Breckenridge. There will also be visitation one hour prior to the service at the church.
Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery, Breckenridge.
LeRoy was born July 16, 1928, near Kent, Minn., to John and Sarah (Grussing) Bontjes. He attended school at country school District No. 65 north of Breckenridge. After his schooling he worked on various farms in the area and also bailed hay for his father. He entered the U.S. Air Force on Nov. 21, 1950, and was discharged in 1952.
LeRoy married Darlene Beyer and they made their home in Breckenridge and also the Benson, Minn., area. In 1969, he was united in marriage to Darlene Rudie and they made their home in Breckenridge. LeRoy drove truck for many area companies including Kost Brothers, Alfred Krause and SunOpta.
LeRoy enjoyed fishing, mostly ice fishing, hunting and camping. He also very much enjoyed cruising and an occasional trip to the casino.
LeRoy is survived by: his wife, Darlene Bontjes, Breckenridge; his children, John (Judy) Bontjes, Wahpeton, Sheila Dudden and her friend Mike, Fargo, N.D., Cindi (Darrin) Myogeto, Pelican Rapids, Minn., Lisa (Richard) Rossum, Ashby, Minn., Jim (Wanda) Bontjes, Englewood, Fla., Joe (Mary) Bontjes, Randall, Minn., Bruce Bontjes, Breckenridge, Pauline (Bob) Maier, Joliet, Ill., Brian Rudie, Staples, Minn., Nancy Wiebe and her friend Steve, Glenwood, Minn.; his 32 grandchildren; his 11 great-grandchildren; his two brothers, Edwin Bontjes, Breckenridge, and Henry Bontjes, Breckenridge; his two sisters, Gladys Forschen, Bottineau, N.D., Florence Hanson, Doran, Minn.
He was preceded in death by: his parents, John and Sarah Bontjes; his brothers, Harold, George, Clarence and Andy Bontjes; his sisters, Rena Math, Hilda Ernst, Jennie Sievert.
