North Dakota DOT taking extra precautions

Published/Last Modified on Wednesday, October 21, 2009 2:17 PM CDT

The North Dakota Department of Transportation recently set up a speed monitoring sign on the N.D. Highway 210 bypass just south of the traffic lights at the 16th Avenue North intersection. Fargo DOT Sign Manager Lyle Landstrom said the North Dakota Highway Patrol requested the sign be set up mainly for beet harvest. ‘It’s there to bring attention to the fact there is a speed zone,’ Landstrom said. One of the deciding factors in having the sign placed on the bypass was the fatal traffic accident Sept. 29.

" I do a lot of driveing in the wahpeton area and somethimes it is easy too get complacent and I started noticeing that it is easy too go alittle over the speed limit so that remimder of your speed limit has slowed a lot of us down because of this monitor sign thanks for helping us too be aware of our speed and we all need too be slowing down alittle bit more with the roads being wet and with winter coming "

" Yes, I to think there are to many speed limit signs. I travel back to Wahpeton frequently and wonder if all the signs are a speed trap or something. Post 1 speed limit and then enforce it. But still the speed was not the accident, it was careless driving. Everyone is always in a hurry. So down, enjoy life, sometime it may be your own. "

" The sign was a great move, but there should be a follow up, the authorities should somehow post some traffic affiliate men in that area. Better yet make a mass seminar about public safety.

" The reminder sign is a nice idea. But, that had nothing to do with the tragic crash. A driver was paying no attention and blew through an intersection and killed a lovely young woman. I don't think the speed limit sign would have helped. Also, it was a crash, not an accident. Not paying attention is negligent, and it's the driver's fault. It doesn't matter if she's sorry, it's still her fault. "

" As tragic as the September accident was, it may only be the tip of the iceberg. As long as we continue to encourage commercial and residential development in the northwest corner of the city, along what was originally intended to be a high-speed bypass, there will be surely be more problems. "

" We all should pay attention, all the time, accidents happen, but so many now are negligent on their part, but so quick to blame. Pay attention, and you truck drivers, all of you. We are small. And no we can't get out of the way, even if you think we can. Your bigger and heavier. So Please think before you get behind the wheel. Or just learn to slow down, remember, your bigger. "

" It would help if there weren't about 4 speed limit changes in 2 miles. Why don't they make the ENTIRE bypass 35 MPH. Would be alot safer. "
