Caregivers in the Twin Towns seeking to boost their parenting skills can join a workshop set to begin Monday, Nov. 2.

The seminar balances two important parenting skills — love and logic — and is designed to teach parents how to offer their children choices, empathy and respect, while avoiding anger and long lectures.

"I think that parents are just finding out more and more the difficulties of raising kids. Love and Logic is a program that is extremely easy and helpful," said Marcia Richman, Zimmerman and Central Elementary School social worker.

The workshop will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. each Monday through Dec. 7 with Linda Bass, a facilitator from Fargo, leading the weekly discussions.

Angela Berge, North Dakota State University Extension Office parenting resource coordinator, said the six-week course gives the parents a chance to utilize the skills at home and return to the group and discuss the outcomes of what they've learned.

"It provides support to parents. You have other people to talk to, others who realize that this isn't an easy job," Richman said. "This program... it's really simple and effective."

“Love and Logic” presents parents with a common sense approach to rearing their children, an approach that cultivates confidence and good decision making.

"It is a program we have done a lot of," Berge said. "It's based on research, and informed evidence. It shows that it works."

While the workshop is open to parents of all kinds, it's intended for parents with children of elementary school age.

Space is limited too, so interested individuals should contact Richman at 642-8328.
