In the first round of the Minnesota Section 8AA volleyball tournament, the Breckenridge Cowgirls started strong but couldn’t maintain their momentum and lost to the Perham Yellowjackets 3-1.

The Cowgirls finish their season with a 14-9 record.

"It was a hard fought match," Cowgirls Head Coach Linda Hillestad said. "The girls gave it everything they had. I couldn't have asked for more."

In the first set, the Cowgirls had the lead most of the way. Baylee Wilson and Samantha Splonskowski, who led the Cowgirls with 13 and 11 kills respectively, helped Breckenridge build a 17-11 lead.

Siri Manning also had two aces in the Cowgirls' run.

But the Yellowjackets came back with strong play at the net and a few mishandled balls by Breckenridge to take the set 25-22.

In the second set, Perham won a close contest.

The set featured nine tie scores before Perham grabbed a 19-15 lead.

Breckenridge couldn't seem to generate much offense in the set and Perham won 25-19.

The Cowgirls regrouped in the third set and came out with a win, 25-20.

In the set, Manning got two important kills early.

Baylee Wilson got the kill at match point to keep the Cowgirls' season alive.

But the Yellowjackets took a hard fought fourth set to take the match.

In that set, Perham got a quick 4-1 lead.

But the two teams fought through 12 tie scores.

The Cowgirls had a 26-25 lead after Wilson got a kill at the net.

But Perham scored the final three points to win 28-26.

"These Cowgirls were a great bunch to work with," Hillestad said. "They should be very proud of their season. We ended up second in the conference and the No. 2 seed in the section. Those are firsts in my years as head coach."

Three Cowgirls were perfect in serving on the night.

Amber Vold was 19 of 19, Manning was 16 of 16 and Breann Larson served 12 of 12.
