Did you know that the suicide rate for older adults is 50 percent higher than for any other age groups. Elderly males aged 85 and up are at the greatest risk.

Here are some facts:

• One in 10 deaths is caused by suicide in older adults;

• The elderly have fewer suicide attempts and more completed suicides;

• More males than females commit suicide with a ratio of 2:1.

If you or someone you know is experiencing some or all of the following warning signs, seek help.

1. A feeling of depression or other mental health problems.

2. Recent loss of a close relationship/partner

3. Increase of chemical abuse

4. History of suicide attempts

5. Change of roles or status (retirement, divorce etc.

6. Unexpected changes or losses in functional ability

7. Financial problems

8. Chronic illness

9. Unwelcome change in life patterns

Some common signs that an older person is contemplating suicide are comments like “I won’t be a bother much longer” or actually saying “I’m going to kill myself.”

Other signs may be giving away prized possessions and composing a “goodbye” letter. A recent change in mood from sad, to positive or happy, with no visible changes in their situation, may also be a sign.

Refusing to eat, forgetting to take prescribed medication and/or saving medication are other warning signs.

Education of the elderly and their families is probably one of the most important preventative strategies.
